1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 cup evaporated milk, undiluted
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 3/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Cream shortening and sugar; beat in eggs. Stir in milk and vanilla. Combine flour, salt, soda and nuts, then stir into batter. Chill for 1 hour. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes.
Variation: Substitute 1 cup of raisins, coconut, or chocolate chips for the nuts.
Makes about 5 dozen Christmas cookies.
