Cookie Tree Lights

3 sticks (1 1/2 cups)butter or margarine (not spread),at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg (make sure the egg is LARGE or it ruins the recipe)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups all-purpose flour

Beat butter, sugar, and salt in a large bowl with electric mixer until blended. Beat in egg and vanilla until pale and fluffy. With mixer on low speed, gradually beat in flour just until blended. Divide dough in thirds. Shape each into a ball and flatten to 1-inch-thick rounds. Wrap and chill at least 30 minutes,or until firm enough to roll.
Heat oven to 350 degrees
Roll one piece of dough at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out using your favorite cookie cutters.
Bake 9 to 10 minutes ,or until tops look dry and bottoms are very lightly browned. Remove to wire rack to cool.

Makes about 48 cookies.
